1930's Modernist Sculpture Stand

€0.00

An original Modernist sculpture stand produced in the 1930’s.

The stand is minimal in its form, with one main block and an extruded base and display area on the top. It was designed in this way to shift all the attention solely on the object or displayed sculpture, rather than it’s stand. However, the beautiful walnut veneer pattern works nicely as a subtle decoration, softening the aesthetic of the overall piece.

Originally sculpture stands were only made as bespoke pieces for the aristocracy to display within their palaces. But from the second part of 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century, they can be found for sale in furniture catalogues by Thonet or Kohn Brothers. There was a demand from the upper middle classes to not only confirm their social status quo, but also to display their art collection.

This stand simply does not age or lose any of it’s beauty. It can work well in a more traditional interior or in modern, minimalistic homes.

This piece is in great vintage condition with only minor wear and tear. The recent restoration of the surface has fully revived the rich colour of the entire piece, showing off the beautiful patterns on all surfaces. The entire piece has been hand finished by Shellac and Nitro varnishes in order to achieve an original gloss finish.
