1930's Modernist Tubular Cantilever Chair by Gottwald

€0.00

The cantilever tubular chair was originally designed by the legendary Dutch modernist architect Mart Stam as the model S43, and from the 1920’s it was produced and sold by the Thonet Company in Germany. This particular piece however was produced in Czechoslovakia by the Gottwald furniture company in the 1930’s under the Thonet licence.

It is a great example of the radical Bauhaus aesthetic. Original yet simple and functional, it represents the ethos of the avant-garde movement.

Overall, the tubular frame is in great vintage condition with minor signs of wear and tear. The veneered plywood has been recently refurbished to the highest standard using original techniques and finishes, reviving the beautiful natural pattern of both the seat and the backrest which were subsequently finished by hand in Nitro varnish. The chair was found with a chipped corner on the top left side of the backrest. This has been remodelled to its original shape.
