1960's Fiberglass dining chair by Magda Sepova for Research and Development of Furniture Industry Brno

€0.00

Since the 1940’s designers were in search of new ways to mass produce furniture. They were experimenting with different approaches, techniques, materials and forms to make furniture that could be produced in large quantities for low costs - whilst being modern and durable.

The most famous pioneers of this approach were Charles and Ray Eames who were the first to introduce fiberglass as the predominant material for making furniture, and especially for chairs.

The 1950’s and 1960’s was the period where Czechoslovakian designers also got interested in researching possibilities for new forms, new colours and a new way to produce furniture. The leading designer in this research was Miroslav Navratil and his team at VNP Brno (Research and Development of Furniture Brno). His most famous fiberglass chair T3 was designed in 1963 and was used in Czech trams and can still be seen today, quickly becoming an design icon for it aesthetics, functionality and it’s quality.

This chair designed by Magda Sepova in 1963 is an example of this research and the result is a subtle organic shape of light grey fiberglass for the seat, joined together with slender black legs made of steel and finished with small expressive red wooden feet. The chair is in its original vintage condition. There is some light wear and tear on the fiberglass seat, some on the metal legs and wooden feet.
