The S43 chair was originally designed by the well-known Dutch modernist architect Mart Stam for the Thonet Company. This piece was produced in Czechoslovakia by the Gottwald furniture company.
It is a great example of the radical Bauhaus aesthetic. Original, yet simple and functional, it represents the ethos of the avant-garde movement.
Overall, the tubular frame is in good vintage condition, however a number of places show sign of wear and tear. The veneered plywood has been recently refurbished to the highest standard using original techniques and finishes, reviving the beautiful natural pattern of both the seat and the backrest which were subsequently finished by hand in Nitro varnish.
