S43 Tubular Chair designed by Mart Stam
S43 Tubular Chair designed by Mart Stam
The S43 chair was designed by the well-known Dutch architect Mart Stam. Produced in Czechoslovakia by Robert Slezak furniture company, a Thonet licensee, this famous cantilevered tubular steel chair is a great example of the Bauhaus aesthetic. Original yet simple and functional, it represented the ethos of the avant-garde movement.
Overall, the tubular frame is in a good vintage condition, however a number of places show sign of wear and tear, mainly visible at the rear. The veneered plywood has been recently refurbished to the highest standard using original techniques and finishes, reviving the beautiful natural pattern of both the seat and the backrest which were subsequently finished by hand in Nitro varnish.
