Rare 1930s Bauhaus-Style Ceiling Light

€420.00

This remarkable ceiling light is a rare surviving example of 1930s modernist lighting, likely designed in Germany or France, at the height of the Bauhaus movement’s influence. Its restrained elegance captures the era’s fascination with geometric purity and functional beauty, translating industrial materials into a balanced, sculptural form.

This particular piece has a special history: it was rescued from a modernist villa, where it formed part of the original furnishing, preserving its authenticity and connection to early modernist interiors.

The light features two perfectly proportioned round steel discs, held in place by a nickel-plated chandelier rod, which runs through the centre of each disc. Between these discs, three bulbs are discreetly concealed, illuminating the frosted glass plates without ever drawing attention to the light source itself. The bottom glass plate is particularly striking, with two concentric clear rings that provide a subtle visual contrast against the frosted surface.

Despite its age, this piece is in excellent original condition. The steel shows only gentle patina, with no rust, and the glass is pristine, free from cracks or chips. Both frosted glass plates remain intact, preserving the soft, diffused glow characteristic of high-quality modernist lighting.

This ceiling light exemplifies the Bauhaus ethos: a seamless marriage of function and form, where every element - from the simple geometric discs to the hidden illumination - is carefully considered. Its clean proportions and understated elegance make it a rare collector’s piece, perfect for anyone seeking an authentic slice of early modernist design.
