1930s Ceiling/Wall light

€150.00

This original Modernist ceiling or wall light is a rare surviving example of 1930s Czechoslovak lighting design. Sourced from a villa in Brno, where it formed part of the home’s interwar refurbishment, the piece beautifully reflects the restrained elegance and material clarity of Czech functionalism.

At its centre sits a striking milk glass sphere in a deep green tone, a colour typical of early modernist interiors, where muted hues were used to create atmosphere without ornamentation. The glass globe is held in place by a circular steel body with a contrasting wooden rim, a subtle yet sophisticated combination of cold and warm materials that adds depth to the overall composition.

The glass shade is attached using three exposed screws set into the steel head. This small but intentional detail is more than practical, it expresses the craftsmanship and honesty of construction that defined functionalist design. The screws allow the globe to be removed with ease, making bulb changes simple while preserving the integrity of the original hardware.

The wooden base mounts directly to the wall or ceiling, giving the light versatility in placement. Whether used as a hallway feature, bedroom lamp, or atmospheric dining-room fixture, it offers both functionality and sculptural presence, giving any interior a soft, modernist glow.

In keeping with its age, the steel presents areas of subtle chrome wear and natural patina. Rather than detracting, these marks contribute to the piece’s authenticity and character - evidence of a life lived and the endurance of true design.
