Original 1930s Functionalist Bakelite Lamp – Table or Wall Light

€150.00

This modernist table or wall lamp originates from the 1930s, a period when functionalist design and new industrial materials were transforming domestic interiors across Central Europe. This particular piece was sourced from a villa in Brno, where it formed part of the original interior refurbishment, giving the lamp not only aesthetic value but also architectural and historical context.

The design is built around a then very modern black bakelite circular base with an integrated on/off switch, from which a milk glass sphere emerges at the centre. The combination of bakelite, glass, and steel reflects the material language of the period - practical, modern, and elegant without unnecessary decoration.

The cream coloured glass shade is secured by three exposed screws set into the steel head. This small but intentional detail is more than simply practical; it expresses the honesty of construction and clarity of function that defined functionalist design. The screws allow the globe to be easily removed, making bulb changes simple while preserving the integrity of the original hardware.

The lamp can be used either as a table lamp or mounted on the wall, making it a versatile lighting object suitable for a bedside, hallway, reading corner, or as an atmospheric accent light. With its soft diffused light and compact architectural form, the piece works equally well in modern interiors as well as more traditional spaces where a single distinctive object can define the atmosphere of a room.

The lamp remains in very good vintage condition, showing only minor wear and a natural patina consistent with age, including a small chip at the bottom of the base. These signs of time give the piece its unique character and authenticity. The lamp has been recently rewired with a new orange textile cable in keeping with the original design spirit and is fully functional.
