1950's Modernist table lamps by Josef Hurka for Napako

€160.00

This original Modernist table lamp, Model 1195, was designed in the 1950s by the iconic Czech lighting designer Josef Hůrka and produced by the Napako company, one of the most important lighting manufacturers in former Czechoslovakia.

Although produced in the post-war period, the design clearly reflects the strong influence of pre-war Modernism and the Bauhaus school simplicity of form, functional construction, and the honest use of materials. The lamp is built from a steel base that holds the light source at its centre, with a distinctive C-shaped arm carrying curved metal shade. The shade is vertically adjustable, allowing the direction and intensity of the light to be easily controlled.

Because of its form, the lamp is often nicknamed the “Lantern”, as the central light source enclosed by the metal structure resembles a modernist reinterpretation of a traditional lantern. This combination of functional engineering and sculptural form makes the piece not only a lighting object but also a small architectural object for a desk or interior.

The lamp remains in very good vintage condition with some signs of patina gained from its age and use. Its mainly small areas of wear on and inside the lampshade. It has been recently rewired in keeping with the original design and is fully functional.

This model is today considered one of the most recognisable Czechoslovak modernist lamp designs of the 1950s and fits equally well in modern, minimalist, industrial, or mid-century interiors.
