1960s desk lamp Model 1633 by Josef Hurka

€150.00

This desk lamp, Model 1633, was designed by Josef Hůrka and produced by Napako in former Czechoslovakia during the 1960s.

Josef Hůrka is widely regarded as one of the most talented and commercially successful Czech lighting designers of the second half of the 20th century. He worked for the Napako company from the 1940s through the 1970s and during this period designed a large number of floor, desk and ceiling lights that became highly popular across Czechoslovakia. Many of these designs are now considered icons of Czech mid-century lighting.

Hůrka’s work was initially influenced by pre-war Czech modernist aesthetics, characterised by clean lines and restrained forms. Later designs also reflect Scandinavian and broader mid-century influences, introducing more organic shapes and subtle colour palettes. One of Hůrka’s great strengths as a designer was his ability to combine strong visual identity with the practical demands of industrial production.

Model 1633 is a beautiful example of this approach. The lamp has a minimal, balanced form finished in a rich brown tone, while the elegant C-shaped steel rod gives the piece its distinctive character. A practical detail typical of Hůrka’s work is the switch placed neatly on the top of the adjustable lampshade.

Although designed in the 1960s, the lamp feels remarkably contemporary and fits effortlessly into modern interiors.

The lamp is in good vintage condition. There are some small signs of wear, mainly light scratches on the lampshade acquired through normal use over the years. All parts, including the switch, bulb fitting, cord and European plug, are original and fully functional.
