1930s Dining chair by Bernkop

1930s Dining chair by Bernkop
This original dining chair was crafted by the Bernkop company in the 1930s, in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm in the eastern region of former Czechoslovakia. The firm proudly positioned itself as a Czech manufacturer, yet its production methods and aesthetic share a strong affinity with the work of the renowned Thonet company which also operated factories nearby.
The design here is close in spirit to Bernkop’s Model K6, but with a distinctive twist: this version includes four additional supports bridging the seat and backrest, adding structural detail and visual character. The round seat, the slender circular support beneath it, and the gently arched legs all carry the hallmarks of Bernkop’s early-20th-century bent-wood furniture language.
Chairs of this kind became highly sought-after not only for their comfort and craftsmanship but also for their flexibility in interiors. With their elegant curves and clean profiles they were used by architects and designers in restaurants, cafés and private homes around the world, seamlessly adapting to both modern and traditional settings.
This particular piece has been carefully restored to its former glory. While it retains some minimal wear acquired with age, it remains in excellent vintage condition and is fully ready for use. It’s a fine example of Czech furniture manufacturing at the beginning of the 20th Century - honest in materials, elegant in form, and enduring in appeal.
