1930s side table by Thonet
1930s side table by Thonet
An original 1930s side table produced by Thonet, most likely in one of the company’s Central European factories in what is now the Czech Republic.
Closely related in spirit to the Thonet model T 153, this piece reflects the late 1930s transition toward a more restrained and purist modernist aesthetic. The design abandons earlier decorative tendencies in favour of clarity, proportion, and functional elegance - principles that defined progressive European furniture of the period.
The table is composed with a quiet confidence: clean wooden elements form a balanced, architectural structure, free from ornament. This sense of purity is complemented by the tabletop, which is finished in a rich brown linoleum, a material widely embraced by modernist designers for its durability, water resistance, and subtle matte texture.
The contrast between the warm wood and the industrial character of linoleum gives the piece a distinctive visual identity, while also highlighting Thonet’s forward-thinking approach to materials and everyday usability.
Nearly a century after its production, the table remains strikingly contemporary. Its refined proportions, honest construction, and understated elegance allow it to integrate effortlessly into both modern and classic interiors.
The table is in very good vintage condition, with gentle signs of age and use, most notably a patina on the linoleum surface that speaks to its history without detracting from its overall appearance.
