1950s Record Cabinet / Drinks Cabinet

€420.00

This cabinet, produced in 1957 as a model SL17/I, was originally designed as a storage unit for a record player, with the upper section housing the turntable and the lower section intended for record storage. Pieces like this reflect the moment in the 1950s when domestic interiors began to adapt to new technologies, and furniture evolved to integrate music and entertainment into everyday living.

The cabinet is constructed from wood with a beautiful walnut veneer, complemented by expressive black door handles that give the piece a distinctive visual identity. The upper section opens through sliding doors that disappear neatly into the body of the cabinet - a clever and elegant functional detail typical of mid-century Central European design. Below, the cabinet opens into a practical storage space with an adjustable interior, originally designed to accommodate record collections but easily adaptable for contemporary use.

Since the record player was removed, the cabinet can now be reimagined in various ways, for example as an elegant drinks cabinet, book cabinet, or general storage piece without compromising its integrity or visual balance. The interior of the upper section can be left in its current state, the wooden shelf can be removed entirely, or it can be replaced with a solid wooden surface depending on the intended use.

This cabinet stands as a testament to mid-century Central European design of the 1950s: intelligent, elegant, and quietly luxurious. Its proportions, material quality, and thoughtful functionality demonstrate the period’s focus on combining craftsmanship with modern living.

The cabinet remains in very good vintage condition with minor signs of age and use. We intentionally preserved much of the original surface, including some patina visible mainly on the black handles and small areas of the wooden finish, as these details contribute to the authenticity and character of the piece.
