An original set of four Mid Century dining chairs produced in 1959 by the Ton Furniture company in one of their former Thonet factory in then Czechoslovakia. This design is widely attributed to Oswald Haerdtl.
Oswald Haerdtl is considered as one of the most influential Austrian Architects of the 20th Century and he designed this now iconic chair simply labelled 'No. 515’ in 1955.
Haerdtl was a master of proportions. On these chairs he created an expressive design form whilst using a minimalist language. Like his architecture, there is a total focus on every detail, for example the hidden screws in the back rest, using the old Thonet bentwood technique and the materiality of the dark stained colour and striking natural texture of the wood. This works well in contrasts with the yellow fabric paded cushion seats This all makes these chairs as modern and attractive as they were some 60 years ago.
All four chairs are in good vintage condition. They have some normal wear and some patina on their surfaces gained from their use over the years which actually makes this set truly original and one off.
