Iconic Jindrich Halabala Record Cabinet, 1950s – Walnut Mid-Century Masterpiece

€780.00

This exceptional mid-century record cabinet is attributed to Jindřich Halabala, one of the most influential figures of Czechoslovak modernism, and was produced in the 1950s. Conceived at a time when furniture was expected to harmonise technology, craftsmanship, and domestic elegance, this piece is a masterful example of that ambition.

The cabinet’s elegant proportions are immediately striking. Gently curved shelves, flowing lines, and a meticulous attention to detail are complemented by the rich, shimmering walnut veneer, whose interplay of lighter and darker tones creates a dynamic, almost architectural surface. It is a cabinet that rewards close inspection as much as it commands attention from across the room.

Originally designed to house both a record player and vinyl records, the cabinet balances functionality with refined domestic presence. At its centre sits a beautifully curved drawer concealing the original record player, complete with its original speaker, microphone, wiring, and fittings. Below, the cabinet opens into a practical storage section with two shelves, while the left and right compartments were purposefully designed to accommodate record collections.

What makes this piece truly special is its versatility. While fully functional in its original role, the record player can be removed, allowing the cabinet to be reimagined — for example as an elegant drinks cabinet, bar, or storage piece — without compromising its integrity or visual balance. This adaptability reflects Halabala’s belief that modern furniture should evolve with its owner’s life.

The cabinet is presented in exceptional, near-museum condition. Its surface covered in shellac and nitrocellulose varnishes, achieving a deep, lustrous gloss that enhances the walnut’s natural grain. All hardware — including door handles, hinges, cables, wiring, and the original key — remains authentic to the piece.

Both sculptural and restrained, this cabinet stands as a testament to mid-century Central European design: intelligent, elegant, and quietly luxurious. It is a rare opportunity for collectors and design enthusiasts to acquire a piece that seamlessly bridges craftsmanship, technology, and timeless modern living.
