Pair of 1930s Modernist beds

€980.00

This rare pair of Modernist single beds dates from the 1930s, a period when tubular steel was radically reshaping the language of European furniture. Although the exact maker is unknown, the design strongly echoes the celebrated AB14 model produced by the Gottwald Company and shows clear kinship with Thonet’s L5 and Vichr’s Model 1003. This particular variant stands out through its distinctive bent-steel detail at the lower edge of both the headboard and footboard—a feature rarely seen among known examples.

The beds embody the pioneering spirit of early tubular steel furniture, first envisioned in the 1920s by avant-garde architects such as Mart Stam and Marcel Breuer at the Bauhaus. Their ambition was to create furniture that reflected the new Modernist architecture: liberated from ornament, materially honest, and adaptable to a fresh way of living.

Here, the graceful, continuous lines of the chrome-plated tubular frame are balanced by the warmth of the wooden head and foot boards. The result is a composition that is both puristic and inviting—minimalist without losing its human touch. When placed together, the beds form a unified double bed; used separately, they function as independent single beds, demonstrating the functional versatility that defined the era.

Both beds are in good vintage condition. The steel frames and wooden panels display a gentle, authentic patina consistent with age and use, enriching their historical character without compromising structural integrity.

A refined example of 1930s avant-garde tubular furniture, this pair captures the optimism, functional clarity, and forward-looking aesthetics that continue to make Modernist design so compelling today.
