1950's Flower Vase by Jarmila Formankova for Ditmar Urbach

€160.00

This is an iconic glazed ceramic vase produced by Ditmar Urbach and designed in 1959 by Czech designer Jarmila Formánková (1915 - 2006). The striking decoration of vertical stripes in black, yellow and pink resembles the fabric of a classic striped pyjamas – hence its popular name, which has become common among collectors and enthusiasts of post-war Czechoslovak design.

The vase is an example of the aesthetic transition between the fading functionalism and the emerging, more colorful and decorative style of the late 1950s. Its simple, cylindrical proportions combined with a playful pattern evoke both rationality and liveliness, perfectly capturing the spirit of the time.

Jarmila Formánková was a significant Czech designer, best known for her work in ceramic and glass design. She was one of the leading figures in Czech design during the mid-20th century, and her work remains iconic within the realm of Czech decorative and applied ceramics.

It was manufactured in the Ditmar Urbach ceramic factory in Znojmo, which had a long tradition in producing utilitarian and decorative ceramics. The "Pyžamo" vase is still found in private collections and at design auctions today, valued for its timelessness and ability to captivate in modern interiors.

This piece is in great vintage condition. There is some small wear on surface of the vase and tiny chip on the bottom which is hardly visible.
