1960s Square Planter / Vase, model no. 13163/M by Frantisek Vizner
1960s Square Planter / Vase, model no. 13163/M by Frantisek Vizner
Designed in 1962 by František Vízner (1936–2011), this sculptural planter represents an early and highly accomplished work by one of the most important figures of Czech glass design.
Produced by Rudolfova huť, the piece is made from pressed crystal glass, subsequently sandblasted and acid-etched, giving the surface its distinctive matte, softly granular texture. The square body rises from a narrow base, creating a subtle sense of elevation and architectural tension — a recurring theme in Vízner’s work, where form is reduced to its essential geometry.
Rather than functioning purely as a vessel, the object reads as a self-contained sculptural form. The interplay of mass, proportion, and diffused light transforms the glass into something almost stone-like, underscoring Vízner’s lifelong interest in material, structure, and monumentality.
This design was awarded the “Great Product” prize in 1964, confirming its significance within the context of Czechoslovak industrial and applied art of the period. Today, it stands as a compelling example of early 1960s modernism, balancing functional intent with a strong artistic presence.
A rare and collectible piece, equally suited to use as a planter or as a standalone object in a curated interior.
This planter is preserved in excellent vintage condition, with no chips and only minimal wear consistent with age, just the slightest traces of a life well lived.
