1930s Czechoslovak Art Deco Side Cabinet
1930s Czechoslovak Art Deco Side Cabinet
An elegant Czechoslovak Art Deco side cabinet from the 1930s, combining richly figured burl veneer with beautifully restrained proportions and a compact, architectural form.
Design & History
Produced in Czechoslovakia during the 1930s, this small cabinet reflects the sophisticated furniture culture that developed alongside the country's flourishing modernist architecture and interiors between the wars.
Its design is based on a simple but carefully balanced composition. The rectangular cabinet body is supported by two slender legs, while a subtly curved front softens the otherwise geometric form.
An open compartment occupies the upper section, with two small drawers positioned beneath. Their richly figured burl veneer provides the principal decorative element: rather than relying on applied ornament, the cabinet allows the natural pattern and colour of the timber to create visual interest.
The compact scale is particularly appealing. At only 60 cm wide, the piece could originally have served a number of purposes within a domestic interior - as a bedside cabinet, occasional cabinet or small piece of living-room furniture - and remains equally versatile today.
The cabinet was sourced in Brno and is believed to have originally formed part of a bespoke interior. Its precise maker is unknown. The quality of its construction and materials is characteristic of the high standard of Czechoslovak furniture production during the period, but without surviving documentation we prefer not to attribute it to a particular manufacturer.

Condition & Restoration
The cabinet has been carefully restored in our Brno workshop.
The restoration has revived the depth and warmth of the timber while preserving the character of the original piece. Particular care was taken with the richly figured burl veneer, whose changing pattern is one of the cabinet's most distinctive features.
The cabinet is structurally sound and ready for use. It retains minor traces of age and previous use appropriate to an original piece from the 1930s. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of its condition.

Why We Like It
There is something almost miniature about this cabinet - not in the sense of being delicate, but in how much design has been concentrated into such a small object.
We particularly like the contrast between the restraint of the overall form and the exuberance of the burl veneer. The cabinet itself is remarkably simple, yet the timber provides all the decoration it needs.
Its original purpose is also slightly ambiguous, which we find rather appealing. A bedside cabinet, a small living-room cabinet, perhaps part of a bespoke interior - today that ambiguity makes it unusually versatile.
And while we may never know who designed or made it, we don't think it needs a famous name attached to it. The quality of the object speaks perfectly well for itself.
