1930s Dining Chair by Bernkop, Czechoslovakia

€250.00

A distinctive 1930s dining chair produced by Bernkop in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm, Czechoslovakia, combining a dark beech frame with beautifully figured Caucasian walnut veneer.

The design is remarkably restrained. A gently curved seat and backrest sit within a slender wooden structure, while the sweeping rear legs create a continuous line through the chair.

What really gives this particular example its character, however, is the contrast between the woods - warm, richly patterned walnut set against the almost chocolate-brown beech frame.

Design & History

Bernkop was based in Frenštát pod Radhoštěm in eastern Czechoslovakia, producing furniture within the country's well-established tradition of industrial bentwood manufacture.

Its furniture inevitably shared certain materials, construction methods and forms with the much larger Thonet company, whose factories had played such an important role in developing bentwood furniture in Central Europe.

Bernkop, however, should not simply be understood as an imitation of Thonet.

The company developed and manufactured its own extensive furniture range, adapting the possibilities of industrial woodworking to the changing interiors of interwar Czechoslovakia.

This chair is a particularly elegant example of that production.

Its form is pared back almost to the essentials - four slender legs, a shaped seat and a gently curved backrest - but careful proportions and contrasting woods prevent the simplicity from becoming anonymous.

Period Bernkop catalogues preserved with this chair provide valuable historical context for the company's furniture production during this period.

Design Details

The chair is constructed from beech with Caucasian walnut veneer applied to the seat and backrest.

The walnut is particularly beautiful.

Its expressive natural grain runs across two of the chair's largest surfaces, allowing the material itself to become the principal decoration.

Against it, the much darker beech frame creates a strong graphic outline.

The rear legs are especially elegant, rising in a gentle curve towards the backrest rather than appearing as separate structural elements. Seen from the side, this creates a continuous flowing profile through an otherwise restrained design.

The seat is subtly shaped rather than completely flat, while the curved backrest follows the body and softens the chair's geometry.

There is very little ornament because very little is needed - the proportions, curved construction and contrast between the two woods provide all the visual interest.

Why We Like It

For us, this chair is all about contrast.

From a distance, the dark frame gives it a wonderfully crisp silhouette. Come closer and the walnut suddenly becomes the focus - warm, richly patterned and completely different in character from the surrounding beech.

We particularly like that Bernkop allowed the wood to do the decorative work.

There are no unnecessary embellishments and no attempt to disguise the construction. Instead, the beauty comes from a few carefully shaped elements and the relationship between them.

It also represents a part of Czechoslovak furniture history that deserves more attention.

Names such as Thonet are internationally familiar, while manufacturers such as Bernkop remain far less widely known. Pieces like this reveal just how rich and varied furniture production in interwar Czechoslovakia actually was.

Condition & Restoration

The chair has undergone a careful professional restoration.

The construction was checked and strengthened where necessary, while the wooden surfaces were carefully restored to revive the beautiful natural character of both the dark beech frame and Caucasian walnut veneer.

The seat and backrest were subsequently finished by hand with shellac, enhancing the depth and natural pattern of the walnut.

The chair retains minimal signs of age and previous use consistent with its history and remains in very good vintage condition.

The construction is stable and the chair is ready for everyday use.
