1930s Art Deco Dining Chair by Thonet

This 1930s Thonet dining chair has a remarkably assured silhouette. A broad, gently curved backrest sits above a shaped seat, while the slender rear legs sweep upwards to meet it. The form is simple, but its proportions and contrasting wood tones give it real presence.

The patterned Caucasian walnut veneer on the seat and backrest brings warmth and movement to the design. Dark chocolate brown beech legs and a matching seat frame give those lighter surfaces a crisp outline.

Design & History

Thonet is closely associated with the development of modern furniture production, but this chair has a character of its own. Its restrained form and rich contrast of colour feel particularly at home in the Art Deco period.

The chair bears a THONET mark beneath the seat, alongside a surviving paper label reading “Sedia.” The purpose of the Sedia label has not yet been established. We have left the label in place as part of the chair’s history.

The chair is believed to have been made in Czechoslovakia in the 1930s. Its individual designer and precise factory of production remain unconfirmed.

Design Details

The curved backrest is wide enough to make a visual statement without making the chair feel heavy. Below it, the walnut veneer seat has a gently shaped front edge, while the dark seat frame defines its outline.

Viewed from the side, the rear legs provide the most elegant detail: their subtle curve carries the eye from the floor right up to the backrest. The chair works beautifully on its own at a desk or dressing table, as well as at a dining table.

Why We Like It

For us, the appeal lies in the balance between restraint and richness. The chair has very few decorative details, yet the walnut grain, dark frame and curved rear legs make every angle interesting.

We also love that its underside retains both the THONET mark and the Sedia label. They are small traces of a longer history, and part of what makes this particular chair worth looking at closely.

Condition & Restoration

The chair has been carefully restored by an experienced restorer using traditional techniques. The natural pattern of the seat and backrest has been brought back to life, and the surfaces have been finished by hand with shellac.

It is in excellent restored vintage condition, with minimal signs of age and previous use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of its condition.
