A substantial 1930s Czechoslovak Modernist desk manufactured by UP Brno and attributed to Jindřich Halabala.

Richly figured walnut veneer, dark oak and softly rounded pedestal bases give the desk a confident architectural presence. Finished on every side, it was designed to stand freely within a room rather than being placed exclusively against a wall.

About the Desk

The large rectangular desktop is supported by two pedestal units. The left side contains four lockable drawers, while the right has a lockable cupboard enclosing two internal shelves.

Expressive walnut veneer extends across the fronts, sides and rear, making the desk equally attractive from every direction. The two pedestal units rest on low rounded plinths finished with brown linoleum.

A discreet cable aperture was added to the rear corner of the desktop by a previous owner, allowing computer and lighting cables to be routed neatly through the desk.

Design & History

The desk was produced by UP Brno, one of the most important Czechoslovak furniture manufacturers of the interwar period. The company became closely associated with Jindřich Halabala, who served as its leading designer and artistic director and played a central role in developing its distinctive approach to modern furniture.

The UP branding preserved on the keys supports the identification of the manufacturer. However, without catalogue documentation for this precise model, we believe it is more accurate to describe its design as attributed to Jindřich Halabala.

According to its provenance, the desk originally belonged to the family of a prominent Brno property developer active during the 1930s.

An additional Thonet Bubeneč label survives beneath the desktop. Its precise significance remains uncertain: it may relate to the desk’s original retailer, distribution or later servicing, but it does not alter the identification of UP Brno as the manufacturer.

Why We Like It

We particularly like the contrast between the desk’s monumental proportions and the movement of its richly figured walnut veneer. Because the veneer continues across the rear and side panels, the desk can become a central architectural feature within an office or study.

It also combines visual presence with genuinely practical storage. The drawers, enclosed shelving and generous working surface make it as functional today as it was when produced nearly a century ago.

Condition & Restoration

The desk has been professionally restored with respect for its original construction and materials.

The wooden surfaces were carefully refinished by hand using shellac and nitrocellulose lacquer, reviving the depth and movement of the walnut veneer while recreating an appropriate period sheen. The damaged original linoleum on the pedestal bases was replaced with new brown linoleum.

The UP-branded keys have been preserved. The drawers and cupboard remain functional, and the desk is structurally stable and ready for use.

There are some minor marks and signs of previous use inside the drawers. A cable aperture added by a former owner remains in the rear corner of the desktop. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of the desk’s condition.
