Design & History

Produced in Czechoslovakia during the 1930s, the stool reflects the clarity and economy of construction that characterised much of the country's interwar Modernist furniture.

The design is reduced to a few simple elements: a circular seat, four straight legs and a cross-shaped structure connecting them below. There is very little decoration, yet the relationship between these elements gives the stool a surprisingly architectural character.

The circular seat provides a strong contrast to the angular structure beneath it, while the cross-bracing is both practical and visual - strengthening the frame while creating an interesting geometric detail when the stool is viewed from the side.

And then there is the red.

Rather than being merely decorative, the colour transforms an otherwise restrained piece of furniture into something much more graphic. Against the simplicity of the form, it feels remarkably modern even today.

Its original designer and manufacturer are unknown, but the stool is a charming example of the progressive furniture being produced in Czechoslovakia during the interwar period.

Condition & Restoration

The stool has been carefully restored in our Brno workshop.

The wooden frame has been refinished in its distinctive red colour while retaining the character of the original piece. The walnut-veneered circular seat has also been carefully restored, allowing the natural grain of the timber to remain visible against the painted structure below.

The stool is stable and ready for use. Minor traces of age and previous use remain, appropriate to an original piece from the 1930s. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of its condition.

Why We Like It

Sometimes the simplest pieces are the most difficult to get right.

There is almost nothing to hide behind here - just a circle, four legs and a cross. Yet together they create a stool that feels remarkably complete. We particularly like the view from the side, where the structure underneath becomes as important as the seat itself.

And, of course, we love the red. Without it, this would still be a beautifully proportioned little piece of Modernist furniture. With it, the stool acquires an entirely different personality.

Perhaps that is what we like most about it: something designed almost a century ago, using the simplest possible construction, can still feel playful and unexpectedly contemporary.
