About the Table

Originally produced during the 1930s, this compact table reflects the Modernist pursuit of practical furniture defined by clean geometry, economical construction and visually light materials.

The blue-painted wooden cabinet appears to float within the chromed tubular-steel frame. A suspended drawer provides useful concealed storage, while the open compartment beneath the top keeps the design light and accessible. The steel legs terminate in black wooden feet.

Tables of this size were used for several purposes in interwar interiors, including as radio stands, bedside tables, small dressing tables and drinks cabinets. Its compact proportions continue to make it particularly versatile in a contemporary home.

Design & Attribution

The table carries no surviving manufacturer’s label or model number. However, its construction, fittings and screws suggest that it was produced by one of the Thonet factories.

Its form is closely related to tubular-steel tables illustrated in Thonet’s 1934 catalogue, including models T 29 and BS 81. Nevertheless, the precise designer, manufacturer and model have not been conclusively established, and the attribution to Thonet should therefore be treated with appropriate caution.

Condition & Restoration

When acquired, the table was in poor condition. Its wooden elements had been damaged and covered with several later layers of paint, while the top had been concealed beneath a Formica sheet.

During restoration, a surviving layer of the original blue finish was discovered. This allowed the table top, cabinet and suspended drawer to be carefully returned to their historically appropriate colour.

The beech elements were professionally refurbished and refinished by a specialist furniture restorer. All hardware and fittings have been preserved. The chromed tubular-steel frame displays small marks and signs of wear consistent with the table’s age and previous use.

The construction is stable and the table is ready for everyday use.

Why We Like It

The vivid blue cabinet gives this otherwise restrained Modernist table an unexpected sense of personality. We particularly like the way the wooden body appears suspended within the slender steel frame - an elegant meeting of colour, geometry and practical interwar design.
