About the Piece

A striking Czechoslovak Modernist side table from the 1930s, attributed to Slezák and closely related to the company’s Model R 7.

The table combines two wooden surfaces at different heights within a continuous chromed tubular steel frame. The upper top, finished in a distinctive deep red, appears to float above the structure, while the lower shelf sits neatly within the frame. Subtle curves at the top of the steel supports soften the otherwise geometric construction.

Compact tables of this type were designed for the modern interior and could serve several purposes - as a side or occasional table, a stand for a radio, or with magazines and books stored on the lower shelf.

Its combination of tubular steel, functional construction and minimal ornament reflects the Modernist principles that transformed European furniture design during the 1920s and 1930s.

Attribution

The table bears no surviving manufacturer’s label or mark. However, its construction and design closely correspond to tubular steel side and radio tables illustrated in Slezák catalogues from the 1930s, including Models R 7 and R 5. For this reason, we attribute the piece to Slezák.

Slezák was among the important Czechoslovak manufacturers of tubular steel furniture during the interwar period, producing a broad range of chairs, tables, beds and other furniture for the modern interior.

Condition & Restoration

The table is in good vintage condition, retaining an attractive patina consistent with its age and previous use.

The chromed tubular steel frame and wooden surfaces show light signs of wear and ageing. These have been preserved as part of the character and history of the piece. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of its condition.

The table has been carefully checked and prepared for use in our Brno workshop.

Why We Like It

It is the little details that make this table special - the deep red top, the gently curved tubular steel frame and the two surfaces set at different heights. We particularly like how such a small and practical piece captures so much of the optimism and experimentation of Czechoslovak Modernist design in the 1930s.
