1930s Solid Oak 'Jerry' Child's Desk

€520.00

A rare 1930s solid oak child's desk by Jerry, a little-known Czechoslovak furniture company active in Bratislava during the interwar period.

Beautifully constructed from solid oak, the desk combines compact proportions with remarkably sophisticated storage: four adjustable drawers concealed behind a wooden tambour door, an open seating area and a carefully finished back that allows the desk to stand freely within a room.

Professionally restored, the rich grain and warm colour of the oak have been carefully revived while preserving the character of this unusual piece of interwar Czechoslovak furniture.

Design & History

For many years, Jerry furniture has sometimes been described on the vintage market as American in origin. Our research, however, points to a much more interesting Czechoslovak story.

Historical records document Jerry, kancelársky nábytok a drevopriemysel - Jerry, office furniture and woodworking industry - operating in Bratislava by the late 1920s. Records preserved by the Slovak National Museum document oak office furniture supplied by Jerry in 1928, while archival material shows the company continuing to participate in furniture contracts during the early 1930s.

Jerry appears to have specialised particularly in practical wooden office furniture, including desks and storage pieces using roller or tambour-front construction. Surviving pieces bearing Jerry trade marks show the same emphasis on solid oak, functional organisation and carefully considered storage that can be seen in this small desk.

This example is particularly unusual because it was designed at the scale of a child. Rather than treating children's furniture as something temporary or decorative, Jerry applied the construction and practical ideas of full-size office furniture to a compact piece intended for a young user.

The desk was sourced in Brno, another important centre of furniture production and Modernist design during the interwar period. Brno furniture dealer Karel Vágner is known to have advertised and sold modern furniture, including so-called American-style furnishings. A connection between Vágner and Jerry has previously been suggested, although we have not yet found surviving documentation that allows us to confirm that relationship with certainty.

The desk therefore belongs to a fascinating, and still relatively little researched, chapter of Czechoslovak furniture history.

Design Details

The desk is constructed from solid oak, with the natural grain and warm colour of the wood forming an important part of its character.

On the left side, four adjustable drawers provide practical storage. These are concealed behind a beautifully made wooden tambour door that slides away to reveal the interior - an ingenious detail more commonly associated with full-size office furniture.

The right-hand side remains open to provide seating space, while gently curved wooden elements soften the otherwise geometric construction.

A particularly attractive detail is the group of three slender vertical wooden rods positioned between the main supports. They introduce a subtle decorative rhythm and visual lightness into what is otherwise a substantial solid-oak structure.

The back of the desk has also been carefully finished in solid wood. Rather than being designed purely to stand against a wall, the desk can therefore be positioned freely within a room and appreciated from every side.

Its small scale makes the quality of the construction particularly charming: this is essentially a carefully made piece of interwar office furniture reduced to the proportions of a child.

Why We Like It

We love discovering pieces that lead us into less familiar corners of Czechoslovak design history, and this little desk has done exactly that.

The tambour door is probably our favourite detail. Sliding it open to reveal four small drawers gives the desk an almost secret quality, while the substantial solid oak construction makes it feel like a serious piece of furniture rather than simply a children's object.

We also love the contrast between its size and its construction. Everything has been considered with the same care you would expect from a full-size desk - the drawers, the beautifully finished back, the solid oak and even the small decorative details.

And the Jerry story makes it particularly special. Nearly a century later, this small desk has introduced us to a little-known Czechoslovak furniture company whose history is only beginning to emerge again.

Condition & Restoration

The desk has undergone a careful professional restoration.

The solid oak surfaces were restored to revive the rich colour and distinctive natural figuring of the wood while preserving the character acquired through age and previous use.

The tambour door and drawers are functional, and the construction is stable and ready for use.

The desk remains in excellent vintage condition, with only minor signs of age and previous use. There are some small marks and traces of wear to the wood inside the drawers, consistent with the history of the piece.

Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of its condition.
