1930s Slezák V6 Tubular Steel Coat Stand

€260.00

A distinctive 1930s Czechoslovak coat stand, Model V6, produced by Slezák.

Its elegant tubular steel construction is enlivened by bright red wooden details and a red umbrella drip tray at the base. Functional, sculptural and surprisingly playful, it is a wonderful example of how modernist design found its way into even the most everyday objects.

About the Piece

Produced by Slezák in Czechoslovakia during the 1930s, the V6 coat stand combines the functional simplicity of tubular steel furniture with an unusually playful use of colour.

The slender central column rises into four angled upper arms for coats and hats, complemented by additional curved hooks below. A simple circular umbrella holder is positioned lower down, with a red drip tray at the base.

The cream-painted tubular steel construction is punctuated by bright red wooden ball ends on the upper arms and feet. These small details transform an otherwise strictly functional object, giving the V6 its distinctive character.

The model appears as V6 in an original Slezák furniture catalogue, alongside the related V5 and V3 coat stands - providing a valuable historical reference for its original design and manufacture.

Coat stands such as this were practical pieces of modern furniture, suitable for entrance halls and cloakrooms in both domestic and public interiors. Today, the V6 feels remarkably contemporary: simple in construction, economical in material and strong in graphic presence.

Condition & Restoration

The coat stand is in very good vintage condition and has been carefully restored in our Brno workshop.

The tubular steel structure has been repainted in its original cream colour, with the contrasting red details restored to preserve the distinctive appearance of the original design.

The structure is stable and ready for everyday use. As with any vintage piece, minor traces of age and previous use may remain.

Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of its condition.

Why We Like It

We love the way such a practical object has been given so much personality. The long, slender cream frame is almost architectural, while the little flashes of bright red at the top and bottom make the whole piece unexpectedly playful.

It is also a wonderful reminder that good Modernist design was not reserved for iconic chairs and expensive interiors. Even something as ordinary as a coat stand could be carefully considered, beautifully proportioned and made to last.

And at almost two metres tall, it has real presence - without taking up much floor space.
