A distinctive 1930s Modernist side table produced by Thonet in Bystřice pod Hostýnem, Czechoslovakia, combining a restrained beech frame with an extraordinary tortoiseshell-effect resin tabletop.

The construction is beautifully simple - a compact rectangular top supported by slender legs and gently curved wooden elements. Against this understated frame, the richly patterned surface becomes the defining feature of the design.

Carefully restored using traditional techniques, the table is a wonderful example of the experimentation with materials and finishes that gave 1930s Modernist furniture so much of its character.

Design & History

By the 1930s, Thonet had travelled a remarkable distance from the bentwood furniture that established the company's international reputation during the nineteenth century.

Its Czechoslovak factories were producing furniture for increasingly modern interiors, combining the company's long experience of industrial furniture production with the cleaner forms and new materials associated with interwar Modernism.

This small side table captures that transition particularly well.

The wooden structure is deliberately restrained. There is almost no conventional decoration, allowing proportion, curved construction and material contrast to define the piece.

The tabletop, however, is anything but ordinary.

Its surface is finished with a durable resin layer creating a dramatic tortoiseshell effect, with irregular amber, brown and dark tones forming an almost abstract pattern across the top.

The contrast is striking - a highly expressive surface contained within an otherwise exceptionally simple piece of furniture.

Design Details

The table is constructed from beech, with four slender legs supporting the compact rectangular top.

Gently curved wooden elements soften the geometry of the frame and introduce a subtle reference to the bentwood tradition for which Thonet had become famous.

The tabletop provides the visual focus.

Rather than relying on decorative veneer, its surface is covered with a strong, water-resistant resin finish designed to imitate the rich pattern of tortoiseshell. The irregular markings give every part of the surface a slightly different appearance and create considerable visual depth.

This juxtaposition between natural wood and an experimental decorative surface gives the table its distinctive character.

Its compact dimensions also make it particularly versatile - equally suited as a side table, occasional table or bedside table in a contemporary interior.

Why We Like It

For us, this table is really about contrast.

The frame could hardly be simpler - slender wooden legs, subtle curves and carefully balanced proportions. Then there is that tabletop.

The tortoiseshell-effect surface is rich, irregular and almost painterly. Depending on the light, different amber and brown tones emerge, making the top feel surprisingly alive against the restrained wooden construction beneath it.

We also like what the table says about Thonet in the 1930s. The company is so closely associated with nineteenth-century bentwood chairs that it is easy to overlook just how varied and experimental its later production became.

This small table brings those two worlds together beautifully - the company's mastery of curved wood and a thoroughly modern fascination with new surfaces and materials.

Compact, practical and visually distinctive, it is the kind of piece that can quietly transform a corner of a room.

Condition & Restoration

The table has undergone a careful professional restoration.

The beech frame was restored and hand-finished using traditional French polishing techniques and shellac varnish, reviving the warmth and natural character of the wood.

The distinctive tortoiseshell-effect resin tabletop has been carefully preserved and remains the defining feature of the piece.

The table is in very good vintage condition with only minimal signs of age and previous use.

The construction is stable and the table is ready for everyday use.
