1930s Thonet Modernist Side Table

€320.00

A beautifully restrained 1930s Modernist side table produced by Thonet in Czechoslovakia, combining slender proportions, warm beechwood and an elegantly balanced two-tier construction.

The design is remarkably economical. A small square tabletop sits above a lower shelf, connected by four exceptionally slender legs and gently curved bentwood supports. There is almost no decoration - the character of the table comes entirely from its proportions, construction and the natural grain of the wood.

Compact, lightweight and carefully restored, it is a wonderful example of Thonet's transition from its celebrated bentwood tradition towards the increasingly pure language of interwar Modernism.

Design & History

By the 1930s, Thonet had already spent decades transforming the way furniture could be manufactured.

The company's pioneering bentwood techniques had made its nineteenth-century chairs internationally famous, but its production did not remain fixed in the past. As European interiors changed during the interwar period, Thonet increasingly embraced the cleaner forms and functional principles associated with Modernism.

This small side table captures that transition beautifully.

The familiar language of bentwood remains visible in the gently curved supports beneath the tabletop, but almost everything else has been reduced to simple geometric elements.

There is no carved ornament, decorative hardware or elaborate surface treatment. Instead, the design relies on the relationship between two horizontal planes, four slender vertical legs and a small number of carefully controlled curves.

The result is furniture that feels remarkably light and modern despite having been made almost a century ago.

Design Details

The table is organised around two square horizontal surfaces positioned at different heights.

The upper tabletop provides a practical surface for a lamp, books, drinks or other everyday objects, while the smaller lower shelf adds useful storage without visually weighing down the construction.

Four slender beech legs connect the two levels and continue almost uninterrupted towards the floor.

The most expressive detail appears directly beneath the tabletop, where gently curved bentwood elements soften the otherwise strict geometry of the design.

It is a small intervention, but an important one. Without those curves the table could feel purely rational; with them, it retains a subtle connection to the bentwood tradition that defined Thonet furniture for generations.

The warm tone and visible grain of the beech provide almost all the decoration the table needs.

At just 30 × 30 cm, its footprint is particularly compact, while the 67 cm height gives it an unusually slender and elegant profile.

Why We Like It

What we like most about this table is how little there is - and how well everything works together.

Two surfaces, four slender legs and a few beautifully controlled curves are enough to give the piece a completely recognisable character.

There is also something particularly appealing about seeing Thonet's famous bentwood language reduced to such a subtle detail. The curved supports no longer dominate the design as they might on a nineteenth-century chair - instead, they quietly soften an otherwise rigorous Modernist composition.

We also love the proportions.

The table is unusually narrow and tall, giving it a light, almost architectural presence. Its tiny footprint makes it genuinely useful in contemporary interiors - beside a sofa or armchair, next to a bed, or simply as a small stand for a favourite object.

It is understated furniture, but certainly not anonymous.

Condition & Restoration

The table has undergone a careful professional restoration.

Our experienced craftsman restored the wooden surfaces and revived the natural warmth and grain of the beech while preserving the character of the original material.

The entire piece was subsequently hand-finished using traditional French polishing techniques and shellac varnish, bringing back the depth and gentle gloss appropriate to furniture of the period.

The table remains in very good vintage condition with only minimal signs of age and previous use.

The construction is stable and the table is ready for everyday use.
