About the Stool

This distinctive solid-wood stool was made in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s. Its character comes from the deeply sculpted saddle seat, which gives an otherwise simple piece of furniture a strong and memorable silhouette.

The seat has been carefully shaped into a shallow double curve, creating a comfortable surface while revealing the natural grain and warmth of the wood. Below, four square-section legs form a restrained architectural base. The contrast between the geometric frame and organically modelled seat gives the stool its particular visual appeal.

Compact, practical and beautifully proportioned, the stool reflects the direct approach to materials associated with post-war Czechoslovak design. Its simplicity also recalls Scandinavian furniture of the period, although the solid construction and darker finish give it a distinctly robust Central European character.

This is a versatile piece that could be used as an occasional seat, placed beside a bed or dressing table, or displayed as a small sculptural accent within a modern interior. Its understated form works especially well alongside Mid-Century Modern, Scandinavian and contemporary furniture.

Condition & Restoration

The stool has been carefully checked, cleaned and prepared for use in our Brno workshop.

The wood retains a warm vintage character, with light signs of age consistent with its age and previous use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of its condition.

The construction is stable and the stool is ready for everyday use.

Design Note

Saddle seats have a long tradition in vernacular furniture, where solid timber was shaped to provide comfort without upholstery. During the mid-20th century, designers returned to this principle as part of a wider interest in honest materials, functional construction and organic form.

Here, the sculpted seat is reduced to a clean, modern profile and paired with an uncomplicated four-legged base. The result is a modest but highly characterful piece: functional enough for everyday use, yet distinctive enough to stand alone as a small object of design.
