Design & History

Czechoslovak furniture of the 1960s increasingly embraced lighter forms, organic lines and a more informal approach to domestic interiors. These armchairs are a particularly elegant example of that shift.

The design is built around an expressive solid beech frame. Rather than simply supporting the upholstered elements, the wooden structure becomes an important part of the chair’s appearance: the front legs rise into gently shaped armrests, while the separate upholstered backrest appears almost suspended within the frame.

Viewed from the side, the construction is especially successful. The low seat, angled backrest and sweeping line of the armrests create a relaxed profile, while the open spaces between the individual elements keep the chairs visually light.

There is an evident dialogue with the organic modernism developing elsewhere in Europe during this period, including Scandinavian furniture, but the chairs retain the straightforward construction and material character associated with post-war Czechoslovak production.

Condition & Restoration

Both chairs have been carefully restored and reupholstered in our Brno workshop.

The solid beech frames have been cleaned and refinished while retaining the natural character and warm tone of the wood. Both chairs have been newly upholstered in a carefully selected fabric that complements the simplicity of the original design.

The chairs are structurally sound, comfortable and ready for everyday use. As original vintage pieces, the wooden frames retain minor traces of age and previous use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of their condition.

Why We Like It

For us, the most interesting thing about these chairs is the space between their individual elements.

Nothing feels unnecessarily heavy. The seat, backrest, arms and legs remain visually distinct, with open space becoming almost as important to the design as the furniture itself. It gives the chairs an architectural quality that is particularly noticeable when viewed from the side.

We also like that they don't immediately reveal where they were made. There is something international about their proportions and organic lines, yet the straightforward beech construction firmly connects them to the rich tradition of Czechoslovak furniture making.

They are quiet chairs, but very good ones - the kind of design that doesn't need to demand attention to reward a closer look.
