€220.00

This is a Mid Century Modern dining chair, designed by Antonin Suman and produced by TON Furniture Company in the 1960’s Czechoslovakia. As a result of Europe splitting in the West and East after the war, in 1953 TON was founded as direct evolution of the Thonet Company and was labelling its products as TON despite still using Thonet factories and workers, technologies as well as owning some of their original furniture patents rights.

These chairs date back to the so called Czech Brussel style (name of the Czech Mid Century Modern aesthetic movement) of the late 50s , early 60s and you can clearly see a Scandinavian influence. The main design feature, apart from the very dark brown colour of the beechwood, are the tampered cylinder legs and the two angled rods at the back which support a nicely curved backrest.

These chairs were also produced in different colours, wood types and finishes, mainly with a formica top in pastel colours, and were very popular and typical for the Czech Mid Century style. After all the years since they were originally produced, they seem still contemporary and modern.

The chair is in great vintage condition with only minimal wear but with a patina mainly on the seat and backrest acquired over the years.
