1960s Czechoslovak Walnut & Beech Coffee Table

€290.00

An elegant 1960s Czechoslovak coffee table combining a beautifully figured walnut top with a sculptural beech frame and lower storage shelf.

The simple circular form allows the materials to become the main feature of the design. Richly patterned walnut veneer creates an almost abstract surface across the tabletop, while four tapered beech legs and the slender lower shelf give the piece a light, balanced profile.

Professionally restored, the table is a particularly attractive example of the warmer and more organic direction taken by Czechoslovak furniture during the 1960s.

Design & History

Czechoslovak furniture underwent a noticeable transformation during the post-war decades.

The rigorous Functionalism and tubular-steel experimentation associated with the interwar period gradually gave way to softer forms, natural materials and increasingly informal furniture for the modern home.

By the 1960s, Czechoslovak designers were working within a broader international Mid-Century vocabulary in which Scandinavian furniture was particularly influential. Tapered legs, warm woods and visually light construction became recurring features of domestic furniture from the period.

This table captures that change particularly well.

Rather than relying on elaborate decoration, its character comes almost entirely from proportion, construction and the contrasting qualities of walnut and beech. The circular top is visually substantial, while the slender legs and thin lower shelf keep the overall design surprisingly light.

The designer and manufacturer of this particular example remain unknown, but its materials and construction place it firmly within the vocabulary of 1960s Czechoslovak domestic design.

Design Details

The most striking feature is undoubtedly the walnut-veneered tabletop.

Its dramatic natural figuring runs across the large circular surface, creating a pattern that changes with the light and gives each view of the table a slightly different character.

Beneath the main top sits a second, much thinner circular shelf. Besides providing useful storage for books and magazines, it creates a strong horizontal rhythm and gives the table a distinctive two-tier silhouette.

Four tapered beech legs connect the two levels and angle subtly towards the floor, introducing the lightness characteristic of Mid-Century furniture.

The contrast between the expressive walnut above and the simpler, darker-toned beech construction underneath is particularly effective.

Why We Like It

For us, this table is really about the wood.

The walnut top has such extraordinary natural figuring that it almost looks painted. From a distance the table appears beautifully simple; only when you get closer does the richness of the surface become apparent.

We also love the lower shelf. It is an extremely practical feature, but visually it does much more - repeating the circular tabletop in a thinner form and giving the whole piece a beautifully balanced profile.

There is nothing unnecessary here. A circle, four tapered legs, a second circle underneath - and one exceptional piece of walnut.

It is exactly the kind of understated 1960s design that can sit quietly within an interior while still rewarding a closer look.

Condition & Restoration

The table has undergone a careful professional restoration.

The wooden frame, legs and tabletop have been cleaned and re-polished, reviving the colour and natural figuring of the walnut and beech while preserving the character of the original materials.

The table is in excellent vintage condition, with only minimal signs of age and previous use.

The construction is stable and the table is ready for everyday use.
