A beautifully restrained late-1960s coffee table produced by UP Rousínov in Czechoslovakia, combining an exceptionally long, narrow oak top with contrasting dark beech legs.

At 133 cm long but only 37 cm deep, the table has an unusually slender profile. Four tapered legs angle gently outwards beneath the top, giving the piece a light, balanced appearance despite its generous length.

The contrast between the warm honey tone of the oak and the darker beech construction provides almost all the decoration the table needs - a simple and highly functional piece of late Czechoslovak Modernism with a clear affinity to Scandinavian furniture of the period.

Design & History

During the 1960s, Czechoslovak furniture design increasingly engaged with the cleaner, lighter language of post-war European Modernism.

The influence of Scandinavian design was particularly compatible with Czechoslovakia's own strong tradition of furniture manufacturing - natural woods, tapered legs, restrained construction and an emphasis on practical everyday furniture could be readily adapted for contemporary domestic interiors.

This coffee table was produced by UP Rousínov, one of the important Czechoslovak furniture manufacturers of the period.

Rather than imitating Scandinavian furniture literally, the table shares its broader design principles.

There is no applied ornament. Instead, its character comes from the proportions, the contrast between two woods and the careful relationship between the long horizontal tabletop and four slender angled legs.

The result is particularly successful because of its restraint. Nearly everything unnecessary has been removed, leaving a piece that feels light, practical and remarkably contemporary more than half a century after it was produced.

Design Details

The most striking feature is the table's unusually elongated proportion.

The oak top measures 133 cm in length while remaining only 37 cm deep, creating a strong horizontal line that works particularly well in front of a long sofa or within a relatively narrow living space.

Its warm honey-coloured oak surface contrasts beautifully with the four darker beech legs beneath.

Each leg tapers towards the floor and is subtly angled outwards, giving the table a wider visual stance while keeping the construction light.

The legs are attached to small metal fittings fixed beneath the tabletop and can be unscrewed individually. This simple solution makes the table considerably easier to transport or store - a practical detail integrated neatly into the construction.

Small dark protective feet complete the legs and help protect the floor beneath.

There is very little else.

And that is precisely the point - the proportions, natural materials and carefully considered construction do all the work.

Why We Like It

We particularly like the length of this table.

At 133 cm it has real presence, but because it is only 37 cm deep and supported by four slender legs, it never feels bulky. Instead, it creates a long, elegant horizontal line through an interior.

The contrast between the woods is another lovely detail. The honey-coloured oak top brings warmth, while the darker beech legs give the table definition and make the top appear almost to float above them.

There is also something very appealing about how straightforward the construction is.

The legs simply unscrew when required, the materials are allowed to speak for themselves and there is no decorative element that doesn't need to be there.

It is a quiet piece of furniture - but one whose proportions and simplicity become more convincing the longer you live with it.

Condition & Restoration

The table has undergone a careful professional restoration.

The old surface finish was removed and the wooden elements were cleaned and refinished using techniques and materials sympathetic to the original construction.

Particular care was taken to preserve the natural contrast between the warm oak tabletop and darker beech legs.

The tabletop retains some minimal signs of age and previous use, consistent with the history of the piece.

The construction is stable, all four detachable legs function as intended and the table is ready for everyday use.
