Art Deco Piano Stool with Curved Arms, circa 1920s
Art Deco Piano Stool with Curved Arms, circa 1920s
A sculptural Art Deco piano stool or tabouret, believed to date from the 1920s. Its warm wooden frame rises from slender, curved legs to form open arm supports at either end of a rectangular upholstered seat. Carefully restored and newly upholstered, it combines a composed, almost ceremonial outline with a surprisingly light appearance.
About the Piece
The character of this stool comes from the way its wooden supports move through the design. Below the seat, the legs curve gently outward; above it, the uprights rise towards straight arm rails. The eye follows these changes in direction, giving the frame a sense of movement without the need for carved decoration.
Seen from the front, the composition is balanced and symmetrical. The upholstered seat forms a broad horizontal line between the raised ends, while the open space beneath keeps the stool from appearing heavy. From an angle, the curves become more expressive, and the relationship between the legs and arm supports is easier to appreciate.
Those open ends are particularly attractive. Each creates a small framed space above the seat, allowing the room to remain visible through the structure. The straight upper rails bring some discipline to the flowing uprights, so the design feels carefully controlled rather than decorative for its own sake.
The warm finish of the wood gives the frame depth, especially where light catches the edges of the curved supports. Against it, the new blue-grey fabric introduces a cooler, quieter surface. Its restrained colour allows the outline of the wood to remain the main feature, while giving the seat a softness appropriate to a piece intended for everyday use.
Although compact, the stool has enough presence to stand on its own. It would make a lovely seat in a hallway or at the foot of a bed, where its backless form could be appreciated from different directions. Beside a piano or dressing table, it offers a more expressive alternative to a plain stool, with the raised ends giving it a distinctive silhouette.
Design & Character
The designer and maker are unknown, and the stool is believed to have been produced in the 1920s. Its combination of symmetry, curved supports and restrained detailing gives it the Art Deco character described in the original listing.
There is also a classical quality to its outline. The raised ends and outward sweep of the legs suggest the poise of earlier stool forms, interpreted here through a simpler wooden structure. This is a resemblance in shape rather than a documented link to a particular historical design.
Part of its appeal is that balance between formality and openness. The stool has the composure of a decorative piece, but its upholstered seat and compact proportions keep it closely connected to ordinary domestic life. It does not need an entirely period interior to feel at home.
Why We Like It
We like how the curves give this small piece such a strong identity. The wooden frame is interesting from every direction, yet the seat remains simple and practical. The straight arm rails are especially effective, bringing a firm line to the softer movement below them.
The new upholstery suits it beautifully. The blue-grey fabric provides a calm counterpoint to the warm wood, leaving the shape of the frame clear. It is an inviting piece with a slightly formal air - equally appealing as a useful seat or as the focus of a quiet corner.
