An unusual solid oak occasional table produced by ÚĽUV in Czechoslovakia during the 1960s, combining traditional woodworking with the restrained modernism characteristic of the organisation’s post-war production.

Design & History

ÚĽUV – the Centre for Folk Art Production - was established in Czechoslovakia in 1945 to preserve traditional craft skills while encouraging their development within contemporary design.

This table reflects that meeting of craft and modernism particularly well. Rather than imposing a strictly geometric form on the material, the design allows the character of the solid timber to become its defining feature.

The long oak top retains an irregular, gently curving outline, with variations in width and a distinctive natural formation at one end. Rich changes in colour and grain run through the timber, including a dark knot that forms a striking detail within the surface.

Four slender, tapered solid-wood legs give the substantial top a surprisingly light appearance. Their simple construction and slightly splayed position contrast with the expressive form of the timber above, creating a piece that feels both rustic and distinctly modern.

At 120 cm long but only 33–43 cm deep, the table has particularly elegant proportions. It can work as a side or occasional table, a narrow console, or simply as a sculptural piece of furniture within an interior.

Condition & Restoration

The table is in very good vintage condition and has been carefully checked, cleaned and prepared for use in our Brno workshop.

The oak retains its warm colour, expressive grain and natural variations. There are light traces of age and previous use, including minor surface wear and a small chip to one corner, consistent with a piece of this age.

The construction is stable and the table is ready for everyday use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of its condition.

Why We Like It

What we particularly like about this table is that it doesn’t try too hard to be modern. Its beauty comes from something much simpler - allowing the material to dictate the design.

There is an honesty to the way the oak has been used, with its irregularities, knots and changing grain left visible rather than disguised. Combined with the lightness of the tapered legs, it gives the table a character that sits somewhere between traditional craftsmanship and modernist furniture.

It is also one of those pieces that becomes more interesting the longer you live with it. No two views of the tabletop are quite the same, and the imperfections in the timber are ultimately what make it unique.
