1960s Czechoslovak Side Table with Adjustable Formica Top
1960s Czechoslovak Side Table with Adjustable Formica Top
A wonderfully distinctive 1960s Czechoslovak side table, combining a slender dark beech frame with a pale pink patterned Formica top that can rotate through 360 degrees.
Designed during one of the most inventive periods of post-war Czechoslovak furniture production, the table brings together playful colour, elegant proportions and an unusually practical adjustable construction.
Originally suited to supporting a television or radio, its rotating top makes it remarkably versatile today - equally at home beside a sofa or armchair, as an occasional table, or as a compact serving table.
Design & History
Czechoslovak design underwent a remarkable transformation around the end of the 1950s and beginning of the 1960s.
The international success of the Czechoslovak pavilion at Expo 58 in Brussels helped popularise a new visual language that became known domestically as the Brussels Style. Furniture and interiors increasingly embraced lighter forms, tapered legs, rounded corners, contrasting materials and optimistic touches of colour.
This table sits beautifully within that design environment.
Its construction is deliberately light and uncomplicated, but the combination of dark beech and pale pink Formica gives it a distinctly modern character.
The use of Formica is particularly evocative of the period. Durable, easy to clean and available in colours and patterns that traditional wooden surfaces could not easily achieve, laminate became an ideal material for the increasingly informal post-war home.
Here it is combined with another particularly modern idea - movement.
Rather than fixing the tabletop permanently to the frame, the designer allowed it to rotate through 360 degrees, enabling the position of the surface to change according to how the table was being used.
The individual designer and manufacturer remain unknown, and we prefer to leave the authorship open until documentary evidence can be found.
Design Details
The defining feature is the adjustable tabletop.
Mounted above the wooden frame, the rectangular top can rotate through a full 360 degrees and remain positioned at any angle.
When aligned with the base, the table has a compact and balanced silhouette. Rotate the top and the character changes completely - the surface projects beyond the frame, creating an asymmetrical composition while allowing it to be positioned closer to a chair or sofa.
The tabletop itself has gently rounded corners and is finished in pale pink Formica with a subtle pattern.
Its soft colour contrasts beautifully with the much darker beech structure beneath.
Four slender tapered legs angle gently towards the floor, while the supporting frame remains deliberately understated so that the adjustable top appears almost to float above it.
It is a simple construction, but one in which every detail contributes to the character of the piece.
Why We Like It
We love furniture that contains a small surprise, and this table certainly has one.
At first it appears to be a beautifully proportioned 1960s side table. Then you turn the top.
Suddenly the whole composition changes.
The ability to rotate the surface isn't simply a visual trick - it makes the table genuinely useful. The top can project towards a sofa or armchair when needed, then return to its compact position afterwards.
We also love the colour combination. The pale pink Formica could easily have felt overly decorative, but against the dark beech it becomes surprisingly sophisticated.
And there is something unmistakably optimistic about it.
The rounded corners, slender legs, patterned laminate and clever moving top capture the sense of experimentation that makes Czechoslovak design of the 1960s so appealing.
It is playful without being frivolous - and practical without ever feeling ordinary.
Condition & Restoration
The wooden frame and legs have undergone a careful professional restoration.
The beech structure was restored and refinished using techniques and materials sympathetic to the original construction, reviving the depth of the dark wooden finish while preserving the vintage character of the piece.
The original pale pink Formica tabletop has been retained and remains in excellent vintage condition with only minimal signs of age and previous use.
The rotating mechanism functions correctly and allows the tabletop to turn through 360 degrees as intended.
The construction is stable and the table is ready for everyday use.
