Model B28 Bentwood Chair by Mundus, 1920s

€240.00

Produced by Mundus in Czechoslovakia during the 1920s, this bentwood chair is a striking variation of a design associated with Thonet’s Model No. 28. Its dark finish draws attention to the chair’s construction: a sweeping outer backrest, a fan of slender wooden supports and a round seat held above an oval stretcher.

Design & History

Mundus was one of the important names in Central European bentwood furniture. Its history later became intertwined with Thonet’s through the formation of Thonet–Mundus in the early 1920s. This chair shows how expressive the bentwood tradition could be beyond the familiar café chair: its open back and unusual arrangement of curved elements give a practical piece of furniture a distinctly sculptural presence.

The seat retains subtle embossed decoration, best seen in the detail photographs. A period catalogue image is included at the end of the gallery to show the design in its historical context.

Why we like it

From the front, the back supports spread like a fan beneath the broad curved rail. Seen from the side, the circular seat and lower stretcher bring a different rhythm to the design. It is a chair that rewards being viewed from every angle, with its character coming from the construction itself.

Condition & Restoration

The chair has been carefully restored, with the wood finished by hand in traditional shellac. It is stable and in excellent vintage condition, with light signs of age consistent with its history. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed view of the finish and seat.
