About the Chairs

The shape of the backrests is what first draws the eye. Broad and gently curved, with rounded corners, they wrap around the sitter and sit above an open rectangular space. This gives the chairs a clear, balanced outline, with the curve of the back set against the straight lines of the frame.

Seen from the side, the rear legs sweep gently backwards, continuing the line of the back supports. The upholstered seats sit neatly within the wooden frames, their softly rounded edges echoing those of the backs.

The wood brings another layer of interest. Dark streaks run through warm brown tones, with particularly expressive grain across the backrests and front seat rails. The mustard-yellow fabric brings out this warmth while giving the pair a lively touch of colour.

Design & History

Dating from the 1930s, these chairs reflect the modernist interest in simple construction, clear proportions and furniture suited to everyday life. Their character comes from the shaping of the wood and the relationship between the individual parts, with little need for added decoration.

They are believed to be of Czech origin; the designer and manufacturer have not been identified.

Why We Like It

The backs have a lovely curve, especially when seen from behind, and give a simple design a surprising amount of presence. We also like how the mustard upholstery works with the dark, strongly patterned wood. A comfortable pair for a small dining table, with enough detail to reward a closer look.
