Rare 1930s A 745 F Armchair, Attributed to Thonet

€2,800.00

An exceptionally rare Czechoslovak modernist armchair, closely related to Thonet’s model A 745 F but differing significantly from every documented example we have encountered.

The chair has unusually generous proportions, a broad curved backrest and distinctive construction details. Its powerful geometric form represents a striking departure from the decorative bentwood furniture traditionally associated with Thonet.

Design & History

An original Thonet production card records that the standard A 745 F was introduced in August 1929 for T. & A. Baťa in Zlín and manufactured at Thonet’s factory in Bystřice pod Hostýnem.

This example, however, is considerably larger. Its backrest has a different profile and method of attachment, while the legs are supported independently beneath the seat. These differences suggest that it may be an early variant, a prototype, a special commission or an adaptation by another manufacturer.

Despite consultation with specialists at Thonet and with Jiří Uhlíř, one of the leading Czech authorities on Thonet furniture, its precise maker and date remain unknown.

The underside carries a German eagle and swastika alongside the inscription “Sich.Pol.”, apparently an ownership or inventory mark associated with the Nazi-era Sicherheitspolizei. The marking documents a later chapter in the chair’s history but does not establish its manufacturer or original purpose.

Condition

The chair remains in very good vintage condition, with its original construction and fittings, including the screws, preserved. It displays light surface wear and other minor signs of age consistent with its history and previous use.

The construction is stable and the chair is ready for use.
