Set of Four 1960s Dining Chairs by Mier Topolcany

€580.00

A distinctive set of four late-1960s dining chairs produced by Mier Topoľčany in Czechoslovakia, combining sculptural wooden backrests with newly upholstered vivid red seats.

The backrest is what immediately sets these chairs apart. A broad, curved T-shaped support appears almost suspended between two slender darker uprights, creating a strong graphic composition while following the natural curve of the body.

Together with the tapered legs and compact proportions, it gives the chairs a lightness that feels unmistakably connected to the best Czechoslovak furniture of the 1960s.

Design & History

Post-war Czechoslovak furniture design developed within a particularly interesting meeting point between local manufacturing traditions and the wider international language of Modernism.

During the 1960s, lighter proportions, natural materials and increasingly organic forms became prominent across domestic furniture. Scandinavian Modernism was an important influence, but Czechoslovak manufacturers interpreted these ideas through their own established woodworking traditions and industrial production.

These chairs were produced by Mier Topoľčany, a significant furniture manufacturer based in present-day Slovakia, then part of Czechoslovakia.

The design reflects this broader exchange particularly well.

There is a Scandinavian clarity to the proportions, but the unusual construction of the backrest gives the chair a much more individual character.

Rather than using a conventional horizontal rail, the designer created a broad curved wooden element supported centrally from below and visually framed by two narrow vertical uprights.

The individual designer remains unknown, and we prefer to leave the authorship open until documentary evidence can be found.

Design Details

The defining feature is the sculptural T-shaped backrest.

Its broad horizontal element curves gently around the sitter, while a central wooden support extends downwards towards the seat. Two darker vertical uprights sit behind it, creating an unusual layered construction.

Viewed from the front, these elements form an almost graphic composition.

From the side, the curved backrest reveals its more practical purpose, following the body while remaining visually separate from the frame below.

The slender wooden legs taper towards the floor, reinforcing the lightness of the overall design.

The newly upholstered red seats introduce a strong block of colour against the darker wooden frames. Rather than competing with the construction, the red emphasises its geometry and gives the set much of its personality.

Despite their expressive backrests, the chairs remain compact and visually light around a dining table.

Why We Like Them

For us, these chairs are all about the backrest.

It is one of those details that seems simple until you look properly.

The curved wooden element, central support and two darker uprights create depth from what could otherwise have been a very straightforward construction. Walk around the chair and the relationship between those elements continually changes.

We also love what the red upholstery does to the design.

Against the restrained wooden frames, it adds exactly the right amount of energy and prevents the chairs from becoming too serious.

And as a set of four, the effect becomes even stronger. Repeated around a table, those sculptural backrests create a rhythm of their own.

They are unmistakably 1960s, but there is nothing nostalgic about them.

Condition & Restoration

The chairs have been carefully checked and prepared for use.

The wooden frames remain in very good vintage condition with minor signs of age and previous use consistent with their history.

The original upholstery and seat padding were beyond restoration and have therefore been professionally replaced. The new vivid red fabric was selected to respect the character of the original design while giving the chairs a fresh and confident appearance.

All four chairs are structurally stable and ready for everyday use.

Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of their condition.
