Set of Four Thonet Dining Chairs, Late 1940s

Produced by Thonet in Czechoslovakia in the late 1940s, these four dining chairs bring together warm beech frames and vivid red upholstered seats. The broad, gently curved backrests give the set its distinctive silhouette, while the tapered legs keep the design visually light.

Why we like them

Look closely at the back supports: each rises from a rounded profile into a flatter shape where it meets the curved backrest. It is a small but beautifully considered detail. The red upholstery brings energy to the honey-coloured beech without obscuring the shape of the chairs.

The upholstered seat pads can be removed. This allows the chairs to be stacked when needed and makes future reupholstery more straightforward. A surviving Thonet mark, shown in the photographs, is another pleasing detail of the set.

Condition & Restoration

The chairs are structurally sound and stable, and the wooden frames show only light signs of age and use. The seats have been reupholstered in a replica of their original red fabric. Please see the photographs for a closer view of the finish and details.
