Design & History

Model 515 belongs to the period when TON continued and developed the bentwood furniture tradition inherited from Thonet. Here, the rounded edges and shaped wooden backrests are brought into a more restrained postwar design. The opening at the base of each backrest lightens the form, while the slim, tapered legs give the chairs a poised profile from the side.

Haerdtl’s association with the model is widely cited, though we have not found a designer’s name on the production card shown in the gallery. That period card identifies model 515, and an original label survives beneath one of the chairs. TON itself documents Haerdtl’s work within its earlier bentwood design history. Ton

Why we like them

The dark wood and yellow seats make a particularly good pairing: the colour draws your eye to the chairs, while the simplicity of the frames lets them sit comfortably around a variety of tables. Seen together, the repeated backrests create a strong rhythm; individually, each chair has a clear, sculptural outline.

Condition & Restoration

All four chairs are in good vintage condition, with signs of age and patina on the wooden frames. The original upholstery and seat interiors had deteriorated, so the seats have been renewed with fresh foam and yellow fabric. Please see the photographs for a closer view of the frames, upholstery and surviving label.
