1930s Extendable Dining Table by UP Brno, Attributed to Jindřich Halabala
An exceptional Czechoslovak Modernist dining table manufactured by UP Brno during the 1930s and closely related to Jindřich Halabala’s celebrated H-356 design.
Combining a dark-stained oak surface with substantial wooden supports and textured galvanised-metal bases, the table has a confident architectural presence. Its concealed extension allows it to expand from a compact everyday table to an impressive dining table suitable for larger gatherings.
About the Table
The table rests upon two solid wooden supports, each anchored by a broad base of textured galvanised metal. This substantial construction provides excellent stability and generous legroom while giving the table its distinctive architectural presence.
The unusually robust tabletop extends from 125 cm to 205 cm. Its two halves slide apart to accommodate a separate central leaf, made in the same dark-stained oak finish. This allows the table to transform easily from a compact everyday piece into a generous dining table for larger gatherings.
Finished on all sides, it has a sculptural quality that allows it to stand confidently within an open interior.
Design & History
The table is closely related to the H-356 desk designed by Jindřich Halabala for UP Brno. Both designs share a similar supporting structure, with two solid wooden uprights resting upon broad metal bases.
The principal difference lies in the top. The documented H-356 is a comparatively simple rectangular desk with a slender top and sharply defined right-angled corners. This version is considerably more substantial, with a thicker, more robust tabletop and a concealed extension mechanism that transforms it into a large dining table.
These differences suggest that it may have been a less common variation, a specially commissioned piece or a related model developed from the same design language. Without surviving documentation identifying this precise version, we describe the table as attributed to Jindřich Halabala.
Why We Like It
The table feels robust and architectural without appearing heavy. Its restrained form is enlivened by the rich oak grain and the softly textured metal bases, while the extending top makes it exceptionally practical.
It is a particularly compelling example of how Czechoslovak Modernism could unite functional engineering, quality craftsmanship and strong sculptural form.
Condition & Restoration
The table has been professionally restored with respect for its original materials and character.
The tabletop has been carefully refinished using traditional techniques, retaining the depth and warmth of its dark-stained oak veneer. Light signs of age and a gentle patina remain, particularly across the galvanised-metal bases, and are consistent with the table’s history.
The extension mechanism functions correctly, the construction is stable and the table is ready for use. Please refer to the photographs for a detailed record of its condition.
