Iconic dining chair designed by Radomir Hofman for TON, combining refined proportions with traditional Czech bentwood craftsmanship, acquired by a customer in Norway.

This chair was designed by the architect Radomir Hofman (1923-70) and produced by the TON Company in former Czechoslovakia.

In the 1960’s, the TON company asked various architects to help research and develop new design forms by using the renown technology of bentwood. TON was founded after WW2 in former THONET factories and continued with the furniture making tradition set up by THONET.

This particular model designed in 1967 and known as no.165 is consider by many as the best example of the research into bentwood technology. Hofman was able to combine brilliant craftmanship with a light expressive form of the chair.

This model was awarded the prize of “Best furniture design” in 1967. Among others, it was selected for the offices in the Czechoslovakian pavilion at Expo 1967 in Montreal and for the restaurant in the Czechoslovakian pavilion at Expo in Osaka, 1970.

Despite all the success and popularity of this model, it was only produced for the export and therefore it wasn’t possible to buy in Czechoslovakia.

The chair is in great condition. The beech frame has been polished by hand, using Shellac varnish. The fabric is original and has been professionally cleaned. There is an option of reupholstery of the existing fabric.
